依據(jù)美國F.N.LONGO對熱噴涂涂層的分類方法，涂層按功能可分為：
1、耐磨損涂層。包括抗粘著磨損、表面疲勞磨損涂層和耐沖濁涂層。其中有些情況還有抗低溫（<538C）磨損和抗高溫（538～843C）磨損涂層之分。
2、耐熱抗氧化涂層。該種涂層包括高溫過程（其中有氧化氣氛、腐蝕性氣體、高于843℃的沖蝕及熱障）和熔融金屬過程（其中有熔融鋅、熔融鋁、熔融鐵和鋼、熔融銅）所應(yīng)用的涂層。
3、抗大氣和浸漬腐蝕涂層。大氣腐蝕包括工業(yè)氣氛、鹽性氣氛、田野氣氛等造成的腐蝕；浸漬腐蝕包括飲用淡水、非飲用淡水、熱淡水、鹽水、化學(xué)和食品加工等造成的腐蝕。
4、電導(dǎo)和電阻涂層。該種涂層用于電導(dǎo)、電阻和屏蔽。
5、恢復(fù)尺寸涂層。該種涂層用于鐵基（可切削與可磨削的碳鋼和耐蝕鋼）和有色金屬（鎳、鈷、銅、鋁、鈦及他們的合金）制品。
